안녕!

Hi everyone! I'm so sorry for not being active recently! I had my exams that I had to study for and my teachers usually do not keep my work load in mind. Buuuuuut, even though I had been slogging my butt off reviewing for other subjects, I did go to YeeHwa again- this time with a larger friend group.

In terms of studying Korean, I have submitted my profile to a tutor organization who will look for a Korean tutor for me. Here is the link in case you are interested~

Because reviewing for exams took up majority of my schedule, I found it hard to save some time dedicated just for Korean. Cue Sebastian, my savior. He introduced me to this app called LingoDeer, saying he found it in the comment section of a youtube video. Duolingo, is not really the best way to learn a language with a script completely different from English. It may have some admirable features, it does not really dive deep into the rules of grammar or why the sentence structure is how it is. Also, the voice they use to pronounce the letters is a computer. As in, its the robotic voice you hear when you play something you Google Translated, so it does not really help you with your pronunciation. Also they have really polite notifications instead of Duolingo who become very salty if you do not return to complete your lesson daily.

However, LingoDeer is an app that has amazing features, and that too completely free. At least the part that I've explored so far. This app allows you to learn Japanese, Chinese or Korean. If you want to see how this application helped my friend Seb kill it with Katakana, check out his blog here.

When you open this app, it shows you three main tabs. LEARN, REVIEW and ME.

LEARN is all about, you guessed it, Learning the Korean. It starts you off with the basics of the basics. Alphabets to introducing yourself, to greetings and a lot more! After learning about 5-10 topics, it allows you to "test out" so you can continue ahead to the new themes. I am currently only on Colors as I did not have a lot of time to learn during this month.

When you click on a topic, it shows the lessons there are, learning tips, and the vocabulary you will learn in that unit.

After you finish all the lessons you need, it unlocks a "story" lesson, where the voice actor for the app speaks basic sentences and you have to later chose the right answers to his fill in the blank questions. I find the tips feature very helpful because if I get confused about a grammar rule, it will explain it right away in super simple English. What I also love about this tab is that all the audio you require is spoken by a native Korean, so you can really figure out where you go wrong with pronunciation.

REVIEW is also basically reviewing. It gives you the option of focusing on either Vocabulary or Grammar, which is great for me because I lack knowledge in both those areas.

When you click on either of these choices, it allows you to select how many every topic you would like to review on, and also allows you to focus on specific words and disable certain words that you are confident with. This tab, also allows you to create Flashcards up to 50, displays weak or strong words and gives you the option of choosing whichever topics you'd like to strengthen your understanding for.

ME is a tab dedicated to the user. It covers everything you do on the app. It displays your name, profile picture and Korean progress (mine is currently 9%). It also shows your average learning time, days’ streak and achievements. Under those, there is a graph that shows your performance throughout the week and if you reached your daily goal. The daily goal is assigned according to your determination. I’ve currently chosen the 5 Star daily goal as that is the amount of time I have left in my day to work on Korean. You can also choose the 10 stars or 20 stars goal if you have a set time dedicated to study the language.
